‘I have a one o’clock dental appointment today, Mr Trotter,’ Maisie Berg said. ‘I shall take a late lunch of course, but I may not be back till three.’

‘Oh?’ Damien looked up from his laptop. ‘Nothing too grim I hope.’

‘Root canal,’ she said, delivering the words without a hint of emotion. Just as he expected. Nothing moved Maisie Berg. The other DMs called her “Ice”.

‘I shall arrange for one of the girls from the front desk to cover for me,’ she added.

Damien checked his diary. ‘We haven’t got much on today. Take the whole afternoon if you like.’

‘Are you sure Mr Trotter?’

‘Why not? You deserve it.’

‘Thank you, sir.’

She turned and left the office. He watched her go.

While the Maisie’s away, the mice will play.

He waited a few seconds after she’d closed the door then took out his mobile phone and punched in the bank’s main number.

‘Records department please,’ he told the switchboard operator then, after a pause, asked to speak with Amanda Rogala.

He could have called her direct from the phone on his desk. An internal call. Extension to extension. But computerised switchboards logged that sort of thing. It would end up on a database somewhere. A foolish clue. An obvious connection if she ever made a complaint. Not that she would. She wasn’t the type. Too scared to lose the job she had. But caution and preparation were part of the thrill. Pushing into the unknown while covering your tracks.

‘Amanda speaking.’

‘Amanda. Damien Trotter. I think you should come and see me.’

There was a pause. Long seconds.

‘Is... about the job?’ He heard the uncertainty in her voice and smiled.

He had a job for her all right. ‘My office, one o’clock. Come straight in.’
